Chapter 10 – Jed

Carly: I need some space. I’ll call you in a few days. Please respect that.

I fucked up, royally. I wasn’t sure exactly where I went wrong, but I knew I did when I came inside to find Carly when she didn’t come back out to the pool and instead found her gone. I texted and called her, but she just ignored me until she sent me that message.

Space.

That was the last fucking thing I wanted to give her right now.

I sat at the kitchen counter with my phone in my hand, contemplating what to say to her to make it all better when I didn’t exactly know what I’d done wrong to begin with. In the time I’d gotten to know Carly, I’d seen her bite her tongue and keep her feelings to herself multiple times to save face and keep everyone around her happy.

And today she had done it to me. I’d hurt her and she’d put her brave face on and slipped away without a word.

Ryker and Elora walked in, laughing, and touching in a way that screamed, ‘we just fucked our problems away’ and I groaned inwardly. A part of me was jealous of their ability to do that, but another part of me was wise enough to know it wouldn’t work for everyone so effectively like it did them. But they had twenty years of history to fall back on when they had issues.

“Where’s Carly?” Ellie asked, grabbing an apple out of the basket on the counter while Ry sat down on the stool next to me and stole it from her and took a giant bite.

“I don’t know.” I answered truthfully.

She paused and so did Ryker, “What do you mean you don’t know?” She snapped, walking around to stand on the other side of the island so I couldn’t avoid her glare.

Zeke walked in from the garage at the same time and glared at me too. “Is everyone pissed at me all of a sudden?” I snapped, lashing out.

“You tell me.” Ellie said, still not sure what happened.

“I don’t know yet.” Ry answered.

“Yes.” Zeke retorted.

“Fantastic.” I bit out.

“What happened?” Ellie asked but I just shrugged my shoulders, truly clueless.

“Fuck if I know, we were talking about her moving into the cottage, and I must have said something wrong because the next thing I knew, she was gone. I don’t even know how she left.”

“Me.” Zeke said, leaning against the counter across the kitchen and crossing his arms. “I took her home.”

“Why?” I yelled. “Why get involved?”

“Because that girl deserved to have someone in her corner for once.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Ellie countered.

“Let me ask you three a question and I think you’ll get your answer from that.” He started. “Ryker, who’s your main priority day in and day out?”

“Ellie.” He answered instantly.

“Right,” Zeke turned to Elora, “You?”

“Ryker.”

“As it should be. And you Jed?” he asked, looking intently at me as he waited for my answer. But I could see where this was going.
